Leongus

We love this National Park and visit annually. The drive into the park goes above the tree line and although high into the mountains, you drive along a lovely green rolling plateau dotted with sheep, horses and cows. Many times the animals are in the road. You can hear the cowbells and watch the shepherds with the sheep. Take a picnic lunch. There are 3 local medieval towns in the area to drive through if you have a full day. Enjoy the Italy that many fail to see!

really enjoyed the trip there/back and just being there. Flowers were beautiful. Walking is very nice and views are spectacular. Would definitely recommend and it will give you a better perspective of the whole area, which is not all about beaches

This national park is unique for many reasons...its mountains are big rocks with tons of trails to walk and breathtaking views; medieval beautiful little towns "borghi" as Castel Del Monte, Santo Stefano, Calascio, Assergi, Barisciano; its inhabitants are nice and at hand and food is spectacular ...zaferano, cheeses, lamb, wine... Absolutely beautiful place...Italy at its best!

Beautiful area, plenty of trails, very peaceful during the time we stayed (June 20-25 2014). The park has plenty of signss around for distances and time it takes to get to peaks and other notable places. Easy to get to from Rome by bus or by car.

Roadbirds

This wild and lovely scenery is reminiscent of Denali National Park in Alaska. Add in countless medieval fortified hilltop villages and plenty of free ranging animals and it makes for an unforgettable experience. Roads are windy, narrow and steep but scenery is absolutely beautiful.

Nice walks with different lengths and difficulties are well signposted. You can pick up free maps at one of the many tourist information centres. Medievel villages still seem to be in the Dark Ages... you should stop along your way and explore one of them by walking through and stopping for a coffee to get the "feel" of that "old Italian" atmosphere long forgotten

This is a little bit of history stuck up a mountain. Mussolini was imprisoned here for a couple of weeks in 1943 and you can see the room where he stayed before the Germans flew in and rescued him!! We hiked up Corno Grande - perfect weather, so many wild flowers - gentians, pasque flowers etc - and then a moonscape at the top where a little bit of glacier is trying to survive.

con grandissimo rammarico da Abruzzese devo ammettere che nonostante siamo la regione dei parchi,(nulla da invidiare ai paesaggi alpini), in tutta Italia ho sentito sempre parlare dell'abruzzo bello ma che non vengono sfruttate le risorse presenti...i rifugi sono sempre chiusi e/o addirittura abbandonati, con la scusa del "rispettare la natura", l'ente parco non permettere di rendere accessibili posti stupendi,scarsa pubblicit¨¤mancano sempre soldi per¨° ogni tanto spuntano degli ecomostri (vedi nella piana di campo imperatore, a prati di tivo ecc... )i punti informazione sono inesistentisegnaletiche dei percorsi x il trekking molte volte scomparse

Il Gran Sasso ¨¨ meraviglioso anche in inverno senza sci ai piedi. Passeggiare nei boschi seguendo le tracce lasciate nella neve dagli animali, circondati da paesaggi meravigliosi, in un silenzio quasi perfetto, ¨¨ una vera terapia per il cervello.

L'anno scorso sono andata in gita con il pulman verso il Gran Sasso, mi ¨¨ piaciuto tantissimooooo tutto, c¨¨ stata una colina che abbiamo salito a piedi (45 minuti in salita) ma una grande soddisfazione, la parte migliore ¨¨ che in mezzo alla montagna ci sta un posto dove vendono la carne e ci sta le bracci (per fare la carne alla bracce) hummmmmm che buonoooooooo e dopo abbiamo fatto un giro nei paesini intorno..... Lo rifarei questa sperienza.
